National Quality Standards
In 2003, the English Tourism Council merged with the British Tourist Authority
to form VisitBritain.
VisitBritain, the AA and the RAC joined together to create National Quality
Assurance Standards (NQAS), a unified rating scheme for accommodation. Under
this scheme, accommodation was inspected and given a grading, using a simple one
to five system. The higher the rating, the better the overall quality and the
greater the range of facilities and service.
This assessment scheme will be undergoing significant change from January 2006
onwards. The VisitBritain scheme is now called
Quality in Tourism
- click on the link to find out more about the planned changes to the grading
structure. The RAC will no longer be part of the scheme.

Hotel, Hostel, and Self Catering accommodation are given
star ratings. |
|
Red diamonds are awarded by the AA and
recognise the best ten percent of establishments in the three, four and
five diamond rating levels. |
 |
Guest accommodation (guest houses, inns, B&Bs,
farmhouses) is given diamonds. From early 2006, this will change to a
star rating |
 |
Caravan and camping parks are rated either by stars or
pennants.
|
 |
VisitBritain give gold and silver awards to those
establishments that achieve the very highest levels of quality. |
 |
The National Accessible Scheme gives gradings for
mobility, hearing and visual impairments. |
Accommodation awaiting inspection or grading may have the phrase ‘awaiting
inspection’ in place of a symbol or award.

Accommodation Bookings
Cancellations
Please remember that in Britain a telephone booking or written confirmation is
generally accepted as a legally binding contract. You may also be required to
send a deposit and this could be forfeited should you cancel your reservation.
If you do need to cancel, please let the accommodation provider know as soon as
possible. Please check cancellation terms at the time of booking.
Complaints
The majority of people have a wonderful holiday. However, if you are unhappy
about any aspect of your accommodation or the service, please tell the manager
or owner immediately. Most problems can be solved straight away. If the
accommodation is registered under the NQAS scheme, it is also possible to take
unresolved complaints to the appropriate inspection body. |
